If you’re getting ready for your first permanent jewelry appointment, first off — congratulations! You’ve made it through your training, gathered your tools, and practiced your welds. But now that it’s time to work with an actual client, you might be feeling a mix of excitement and nerves.
It’s completely normal to feel that way. I remember my first appointment and how nervous I was. Even though I had practiced on my husband a bunch, I was about to have my first paying client and my hands tend to shake when I'm nervous...add in caffeine and a pre appointment workout? That was a bad idea. I almost never workout before my appointments now. I don't know what it is but my hands are definitely are less steady after a workout. The good news? With a few simple strategies, you can calm those nerves and walk into your appointment feeling confident and ready.
1. Fuel Your Body (and Avoid the Caffeine Overload)
This might sound small, but it makes a big difference. Make sure you eat something before your appointment — ideally something that will keep your blood sugar steady.
On the flip side, try to limit caffeine that day. I love my coffee so much but on mornings that I have a lot of clients, I'll have one cup at home because I can't survive without coffee, and bring the second cup with me as a reward for when I'm done. Opt for water or a calming tea to stay hydrated and relaxed.
2. Give Yourself Time to Set Up
Don’t rush into your first appointment. Arrive early or give yourself extra setup time so you can make sure everything is ready... your chains, welder, tools, and client area. A calm, organized setup helps you feel more in control and confident before your client even sits down.
3. Steady Those Hands
Even with preparation, a little shaking is totally normal. One easy trick I swear by is to rest your hands on your table or workstation while you weld. Having that point of contact naturally steadies your hands and helps you feel more grounded.
Remember: confidence comes from practice, not perfection. Every appointment gets easier as your muscle memory builds and your confidence grows.
4. Quiet the Imposter Syndrome
That little voice that whispers, “Who am I to be doing this?” — we’ve all heard it. Imposter syndrome often shows up right when you’re stepping into something new or outside your comfort zone.
You earned your spot here. You trained, you practiced, and you’re ready. Your clients aren’t looking for “perfect” — they’re looking for someone who cares, who shows up professionally, and who helps them feel special.
When those doubts creep in, remind yourself that everyone starts somewhere. Each appointment you complete is proof that you belong in this space.
5. Focus on Connection, Not Perfection
Your client doesn’t expect you to be flawless. They’re there for the experience. Smile, talk them through the process, and focus on making them feel comfortable. The more you connect with your client, the more natural and confident you’ll feel.
6. Reflect + Celebrate
After your first appointment, take a minute to reflect on what went well and what you can improve for next time. Then celebrate! You just welded your first permanent jewelry piece on a real client! That’s a huge accomplishment and something to be proud of.
The bottom line: It’s okay to be nervous — it means you care. Every permanent jewelry artist starts somewhere, and with each appointment, your confidence will grow. So take a deep breath, trust your training, and remember you’ve got this!
